Heatwave Map Spotlight: South Asia

Why is there a heatwave in South Asia?

Since April 2026, South Asia has been experiencing a prolonged heatwave, driven by strong high-pressure systems that trap hot air near the surface (1).

Temperatures across much of the region have soared well above seasonal averages, with some areas approaching 45-50 degrees Celsius (113-122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Climate scientists say meteorological conditions are up to 4°C warmer than in the past, mostly ascribing the increased heat to human-driven climate change.

Which countries are affected by the heatwave?

Extreme heat and heat stress are affecting several countries across South Asia, including:

How long will the heatwave last?

The heatwave began in early April 2026 and is expected to persist through the summer months across parts of South Asia (2).

Monsoon rainfall can provide temporary relief, but high temperatures and humidity may continue to produce significant heat stress between periods of rainfall.

Are there any alerts in place?

Multiple heat alerts remain active across South Asia. National meteorological agencies issue heatwave warnings and advisories as dangerous conditions develop, with alert levels varying by country and region.

Residents are advised to stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun exposure, drink fluids, and check on elderly individuals. Outdoor workers should reschedule activities to cooler hours.
