What is the name and location of the storm?
As of October 22, 2025, Tropical Storm Ramil, internationally known as Fengshen, has moved away from the Philippines and is now advancing across the northern and central South China Sea toward the central coast of the Indochina Peninsula. The storm continues to bring widespread heavy rainfall and flooding risks to parts of Vietnam, southern China, and nearby coastal regions. (1)
Earlier, on October 19, 2025, the system was crossing parts of Luzon, passing near Olongapo City, and tracking west-northwest across the West Philippine Sea before intensifying over open waters.
Which cities or areas are affected by the storm?
Tropical Storm Ramil has produced heavy rain and strong winds across large parts of Luzon including Metro Manila and neighboring central Luzon provinces. Coastal provinces and low-lying communities experienced coastal flooding and suspended sea travel. (5)
As the system moved westward into the northern and central South China Sea, warnings and heavy rain forecasts were issued for eastern Taiwan and southern and central coastal regions including Fujian and Guangdong provinces and Hainan Island. (6)
Central Vietnam from Ha Tinh through Quang Ngai was forecast to receive widespread, prolonged heavy rainfall with particular concern for Da Nang and nearby coastal cities where intense rainfall and flooding were expected.
- Vietnam: Coastal provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai including Da Nang and nearby islands.
- China and Taiwan coastal zones: northern South China Sea coasts, Fujian and Guangdong coastal regions and Hainan Island.
What is the projected path and intensity of the storm?
As of October 22, 2025, the system is expected to head toward the northern South China Sea and the central Vietnam coast region where it may make landfall between October 22 and October 23, 2025. (7)
Intensity forecasts showed sustained winds near the center in the range of about 75 to 102 kilometers per hour at peak observations and gusts higher than that. Agencies warned the storm could strengthen into a severe tropical storm and then gradually weaken after landfall.
Main hazards and expected impacts include:
- Prolonged heavy rainfall with very high localized totals that can lead to flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.
- Strong coastal winds and storm surge in low lying coastal communities.
- Very rough to extremely rough seas with high waves making marine operations hazardous.
Are there any evacuation orders or alerts in place?
Emergency management agencies and meteorological services issued multiple levels of warnings and advisories as the system approached. National and local authorities in affected countries activated preparedness measures and disseminated warnings to at-risk populations.
Public actions and alerts in place include:
- Issuance of tropical cyclone wind signals and local evacuation advisories for flood and storm surge prone communities. (2)
- Mass messaging, readiness directives for local government units and reservoir management orders in Vietnam and proactive preparedness measures for coastal provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai. (8)
- National meteorological authorities issuing blue to yellow alerts for coastal regions and advising of heavy rain and strong winds for Taiwan and southern China coastal areas.
If you are in an affected area follow local official channels for evacuation and shelter instructions and avoid coastal and flood prone zones until authorities declare it safe to return.
How can I protect myself from mold after flooding?
It’s important to take steps to prevent mold after a flood.
- Before entering a flooded area, make sure it is safe and free from electrical hazards or structural damage.
- Use protective gear: wear gloves, goggles, and a KN95/FFP2 mask to minimize exposure to mold spores.
- If there is still standing water, remove it as quickly as possible. Use pumps, wet-dry vacuums, or buckets to extract the water.
- Open windows and doors to facilitate air circulation and use fans, dehumidifiers, and HVAC systems to help dry the space. This step is crucial within the first 24-48 hours after flooding to prevent mold growth.
- Remove and discard any items that have been severely damaged by floodwater and cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. This includes carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, and any other porous materials.
- Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces with a detergent or cleaner suitable for mold remediation. Use a solution of 1.5 cups of bleach mixed with one gallon of water to disinfect nonporous surfaces. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products, as the fumes are toxic.
- Maintain an indoor relative humidity (RH) of 35-50%. High humidity promotes mold growth, so consider using dehumidifiers in damp areas.
- Run a high-performance air purifier for mold, both during and after the mold removal work.
- If the flooding and mold damage are extensive, consider contacting professionals specializing in mold remediation to ensure proper cleanup and restoration.
Remember, mold can pose health risks, so it's important to take these steps promptly and thoroughly. If you experience persistent mold-related health issues or have concerns about extensive mold growth, consult with a medical professional or a mold remediation specialist.
