This is the world’s first time-lapse showing the cause of September’s Malaysia haze. It shows pollution from Indonesia spreading out across Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of the region, highlighting the extent of the impact of the forest fires on Indonesia’s neighbours and the threat to the region’s health.
The one-minute-long video uses images recorded by the AirVisual Map, the only real-time worldwide air quality map available online. Using artificial intelligence (AI), AirVisual Map combines data from public government air monitoring stations, satellite data and non-governmental community contributors, presenting a live model of pollution airflows across the world.
The time lapse displays the air flow of PM2.5 over a two-week period up to Tuesday, Sept. 24. PM2.5 is particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less – or 1/30 of a human hair – that is considered a good gauge of air quality. The pollution is represented by vivid colours representing the different categories on the U.S. Air Quality Index.
The unique video shows unhealthy pollution flowing across from Indonesia’s Sumatra island and Kalimantan region on Borneo to Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the south of Thailand and eventually the Philippines.
